CE Marking

European conformity marking indicating a product meets EU safety, health, and environmental requirements.

What is CE marking?

CE marking (Conformité Européenne) indicates that a product complies with the applicable EU legislation — such as PED, ATEX, Low Voltage Directive, EMC Directive, or Machinery Directive. It's not a quality mark but a legal requirement for placing products on the EU market. The manufacturer self-declares conformity or, for higher-risk products, involves a notified body.

CE in product data

Every product sold in the EU that falls under a CE-relevant directive should have CE marking information in its catalog data: which directives apply, the declaration of conformity reference, notified body number (if applicable), and relevant harmonized standards. This is frequently missing or incomplete in product catalogs.

Common issues

Suppliers often include "CE: Yes" as a simple boolean when the actual requirement is much richer: which directives, which standards, certificate numbers. Procurement systems and end users increasingly need this detail for compliance documentation. ETIM includes attributes for declaring applicable directives.
