What is ATEX?
ATEX refers to two EU directives governing equipment and workplaces in potentially explosive atmospheres: the Equipment Directive (2014/34/EU) for manufacturers and the Workplace Directive (1999/92/EC) for employers. The name comes from the French "ATmosphères EXplosibles."
ATEX marking
ATEX-certified equipment carries a specific marking that encodes: equipment group (I for mining, II for surface), category (1/2/3 indicating protection level), gas/dust suitability (G/D), temperature class (T1-T6), and explosion protection type (e.g., Ex d, Ex e, Ex ia). This is dense, structured data that belongs in your product catalog.
Why it matters for product data
For manufacturers of motors, sensors, lighting, junction boxes, and other equipment used in chemical plants, oil/gas, and mining: ATEX data must be complete and accurate. Missing or wrong ATEX markings can mean rejected equipment at the installation site — or worse, safety incidents. ETIM has specific attributes for ATEX classification.
