BMEcat

XML-based standard for electronic product catalog exchange between suppliers and buyers.

What is BMEcat?

BMEcat is an XML-based standard for exchanging product catalog data electronically. Developed by the BME (German Federal Association for Materials Management, Purchasing and Logistics), it defines a structured format for transmitting product information including descriptions, prices, media, and classification data between suppliers and buyers.

Who uses it?

BMEcat is the standard catalog exchange format in German-speaking B2B commerce. Wholesalers, distributors, and procurement platforms in DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) routinely require suppliers to deliver catalogs in BMEcat format. It's often combined with ETIM or eCl@ss classification.

Why it matters for product data

BMEcat is not a classification — it's a transport format. Think of it as the envelope: ETIM or eCl@ss provides the product structure, and BMEcat is how you deliver it. A valid BMEcat file includes article data, pricing, media references, and classification links. Getting it wrong means your catalog gets rejected by the buyer's system.

BMEcat versions

BMEcat 1.2 is still widely used. BMEcat 2005 added support for business processes (new catalog, update, price update). Always confirm which version your buyer's system accepts. Some platforms accept both, others are strict.
